How to name a goblin

Goblins are the chaotic heart of fantasy - equal parts menace, comedy, and surprise. Whether your goblin is a scheming chieftain, a pyromaniac inventor, or a surprisingly eloquent diplomat, the right name brings them to life at the table.

Goblin names in fantasy tend to be short, sharp, and slightly ridiculous. They often feature hard consonants, guttural sounds, and unexpected combinations that make them fun to say out loud. Think "Grix," "Snaggle," or "Blix" - names that are instantly memorable and full of personality.

Our Goblin Name Generator produces names ranging from the menacing to the absurd. Use Instant Mode for rapid-fire naming when your players unexpectedly befriend (or stab) a random goblin NPC. Switch to AI Mode when you want names with personality traits, quirks, or backstory snippets that make each goblin unique.

The best goblin names capture that wonderful tension between threat and humor. A goblin named "Skullmuncher" is funny until you realize he earned that name. Try generating a batch and pick the ones that make you grin - those are the names your players will remember.

Frequently asked questions

Goblin names in fantasy are usually short, harsh and guttural, built from hard consonants and clipped syllables, such as Grizzlk, Snagtooth or Vex. Many goblins also carry a descriptive nickname earned in life (Snag-eye, Rotgut), which says more about them than a formal name does.
A good goblin name is punchy and a little ugly: think sharp sounds (k, z, g, sn-, gr-) and one or two syllables. Pair a crude root with a trait or body part for flavour, like Krek the Quick or Mudfang. Avoid elegant, flowing names, which feel wrong for goblins.
Examples include Grizzlk, Snagtooth, Vex, Mudfang, Skritch, Gobber and Rootnose. For variety, mix a harsh given name with a descriptive surname or clan tag (Skritch of the Black Teeth). The generator above does this automatically, with optional AI-written personality.
In most fantasy settings goblins organise into raiding tribes or clans named after a trait, totem or territory, such as the Black Teeth, the Rust Claws or the Bloodmoon tribe. A goblin's full identity is often "given name + clan", which is great for fleshing out an encounter.
